Timaru, New Zealand
40m x 90m main gable with a side height of 7.9m
Manufacturing facility
Designed as a blast and paint facility, featuring gantry cranes and large openings for moving around heavy structural beams. The building also contains lean-tos on the sides - 10m x 20m, 20m x 20m, and 15m x 30m.
Abrasive Blasting Contractors are a Timaru-based sandblasting and painting business that has operated in the area for decades. They have the skills, experience and state-of-the-art equipment, which enable them to undertake high-quality professional industrial restoration work. They use the correct blast media to provide durable, long-lasting paint finishes.
ABC was operating out of two different sites which were aged and too small for the scale and quantity of the steel being coated. Consequently, the owner decided to invest in a new facility.
Large, open clearspan spaces.
Double 5-ton gantry cranes.
Separate lean-tos for different types of painting processes.
Wide openings to allow movement of large steel beams.
Client involvement to take care of the concrete floor and undertake their own sliding doors.
The solution was a 40m wide building with a row of centre columns - allowing 5-ton gantries to operate in each 20m half. The side height was 7.9m giving space for the large cranes and down shop rails.
Lower lean-tos on each side give efficient cover for different blast and paint processes. Sliding doors on the end and full bay width on the sides give wide openings. There is also a truss on one side that takes out a column allowing a 20m opening into a lean-to, so long beams can be taken in sideways.
The client now has a facility that is close to their customers.
