Servicing only the Whangarei and Northland areas, they try to manage only one job at a time allowing them to provide each customer with the highest results. They pride themselves on their diverse range of experience and equipment to minimise sub-contractor work on their projects.

/ The Challenge

David (owner of D Lenssen Builders) needed a new shed to base his business from. The shed allows David to store material ordered in advance, keep equipment safe and dry, and prefabricate aspects of his building projects.

However, he didn't want just any shed. He wanted a shed that was both strong and good-looking. David had a vision to incorporate in-situ concrete structural columns with feature timber grain patterns into the building design to give his shed a unique point of difference.

Requirements

Needed to integrate feature concrete columns into the structural design.

20m clearspan design.

Mezzanine floors with an external balcony.

/ The Solution

XL Structural Steel has our own in-house design team which meant we were able to seamlessly integrate the design of the concrete columns into both the structural and architectural building design.

To achieve this, we used the RHS structural steel rafter system and connected it with the concrete columns. The structural steel rafters gave David the peace of mind that his shed would stand the test of time, while the timber framing and timber purlins meant it was easy to install. The choice of timber also ensured it was a noise-reducing design.

XL provided the design and compliance package, including the timber-framed studio/office design. We ensured all the paperwork was sorted and gained the building consent on the client's behalf.

This building was provided as a building kitset which meant David could install it in his own time including building the formwork and pouring the structural concrete columns in-situ himself.
