Cambridge, New Zealand
37.0m x 75m long with a side height of 7.0m
Manufacturing facility
This facility was designed for manufacturing machinery and structural steel products. The building has columns at 12.5m spaces down the centre and 5.0m gantries on each side. This gives maximum flexibility for the movement of products and raw materials.
HW Industries is a general engineering shop that specialises in manufacturing earthmoving scrapers for farmers and contractors, and have been setting the standard in New Zealand for over 60 years. They can also do repairs and maintenance and customization on any items you need around the home and farm.
The HW industries team had been working out of an older building for many years. This had become unfit for purpose as the layout and size were not efficient for the manufacturing of large scrapers or for the fabrication of structural steel for the construction industry.
They required a large open facility that would allow a more efficient production process, and allow them to take on a more diverse workload and grow the business. They also required a building that was designed to take multiple overhead gantry cranes, on each side of the building with minimal central columns.
Multiple 5-ton gantry cranes are to be installed on each side of the gable.
Minimal central props down the centre of the building.
Workshop office and facilities integrated into the design.
Large span on each side of the apex to allow plenty of production space.
Maximum height inside the building, while still meeting the resource consent height limits.
The solution was a 37m wide building with a row of central columns down the middle. This allowed 5 ton cranes to be installed in each half of the building, which meant production could be split into zones. Every second column down the apex was removed, and the crane was supported with a truss. This gave 12.5m spaces between the columns which means a 12m length of steel or a large scraper can easily be moved from one side to the other.
By having purlins between and using XL’s slim RHS rafters, HW industries were also able to get maximum height while still staying within their resource consent height limits.
This facility has been a game changer for HW industries and has allowed their production to be much more efficient. It has also given them the ability to grow and take on a more diverse workload.
Two gantry cranes are installed on each side of the gable to allow for multiple fabrication and production lines to run in parallel.
RHS rafter coupled with Steelbone enclosed purlin provides a zero-perch rafter design.
37.0m x 75.0m long gable building.
6.9m side height x 8m at the apex.
Steelbone enclosed purlins and girts.
Two 5-ton gantry cranes.
Fibre-reinforced industrial floor slab.
