This factory has a 25m clearspan portal design, with a 7.5m side height. It was created with an 11m bay design to allow for extra wide roller shutter doors so finished prefabricated home designs can be transported out of the factory with ease.

South Peak Homes are based in Westport and provide high-quality, off-site manufactured homes and buildings to the West Coast and Upper South Island. They specialise in constructing and delivering a range of residential homes, commercial office blocks, and multi-unit accommodation buildings.

/ The Challenge
From its beginning in 2019, South Peak Homes experienced rapid growth and needed to move to the next stage in order to increase capacity. The current setup used site shelters and containers, which had been quickly outgrown. South Peak Homes also needed a new facility to protect its manufacturing process from the west coast elements.
The building needed to be clearspan, and have plenty of large doors for easy access to move houses in and out. It required a 7.5m stud height to allow space for homes to be raised and worked on the inside. The building also needed to be future-proof, with the ability to be added onto once production increases.

/ The Solution
XL provided the full design and building construction, along with the installation of large roller shutter doors that allowed houses to be moved out of the production line once completed. This also included tieing in with the existing concrete floor slab.
XL Structural Steel's unique RHS portal system was used to span the 25m required.

The unique RHS portal design achieved the 25m unobstructed span without the need for an obtrusive knee brace and apex braces. This gave maximum headroom throughout the factory for constructing prefab houses.
