    Tractortech began as a two-man operation in 2012 focussing on carrying out repairs and maintenance on John Deere tractors for local Ag contractors and farmers. Since its beginning, Tractortech has continued to grow year on year, a result of providing a top-quality job and customer service all at competitive rates to the Waikato region.

    With increasing staff levels and workload, a custom-built workshop was required to enable Tractortech to move to the next stage.

    The challenge

    Due to continued year-on-year growth, Tractortech required a new custom-built workshop that gave them the room to grow and repair tractors efficiently.

    This new workshop needed to have plenty of doors for easy access, and canopies for protection from the weather. They also required a custom office space with a reception for customers, and a mezzanine floor for extra storage and a large staffroom space.

    Tractortech was also looking for a provider that could take care of the full design including the offices, fire reports and building consent giving them a full set of plans that their builder could construct from.

    Additionally, Tractortech wanted to incorporate a 3-ton overhead gantry to increase efficiencies in labour time and to maximise the workshop space.

    The Requirements

    • Large clearspan building.
    • Large doors each side of the workshop.
    • Canopies on each side.
    • Office + reception area.
    • Mezzanine floor for storage and staffroom – as well as an outdoor deck.
    • Overhead gantry.
    • Needed to be secure and strong.


    The Solution

    After looking at options, XL Structural Steel was selected as the preferred solutions provider due to the ability to be able to design in the 3-ton overhead gantry. All the design aspects were looked after by XL Structural – from the structural and office plans right through to consent.

    The result was an XL Structural designed workshop which was 20m wide x 26m long with 3m canopies each side. The front bay was fitted out as offices with a mezzanine floor above and a deck to one side.

    The team found very quickly that the overhead gantry crane gave significant productivity gains rather than using forklifts. Also, the whole workshop can be accessed by the crane, rather than just the centre where a forklift is able to manoeuvre .
