Hangar
A service rail underneath the main portal was added to the design by our engineer so engines could be easily lifted from the helicopters, speeding up service times and reducing down-time. The XL Structural hangar design included timber elements to improve the aesthetics and also reduce noise in the busy and open hangar design.
Based out of Te Kuiti, deep in the Waikato Rotor Work NZ is a commercial aviation firm offering helicopter aerial applications for farmers, forestry, contractors and general air transport. With over 35 years of experience and a fleet of 11 helicopters, Rotor Work NZ is one of the largest privately-owned helicopter companies in the North Island of New Zealand.
Owned by founders Cathy and Ben Dellow the business has come a long way since its early days specialising in deer recovery. Yet some things have remained the same. A focus on exceptional service for the thousands of clients it has had over the years has fuelled the business’s growth.
As the business has grown the firm has also grown its fleet of helicopters and required more room to store and service its fleet of helicopters.
Helicopter downtime costs Rotor Work NZ money as non-operational hours, maintenance, and loss of income begin to add up. The decision was made to invest in a new hangar at Kihikihi that could meet the company’s storage and maintenance needs, now and into the future.
Needed to accommodate a gantry rail for maintenance and weighing helicopters.
Needed to accommodate unique concertina door openings.
Needed a wide span opening to fit multiple helicopters.
Needed a tidy design to also serve as head office/base of operations.
The XL Structural team were selected as the preferred solution because the team could meet all of the above requirements while remaining on budget and delivering on time.
A service rail underneath the main portal was added to the design by our engineer so engines could be easily lifted from the helicopters, speeding up service times and reducing down-time. The XL Structural hangar design included timber elements to improve the aesthetics and also reduce noise in the busy and open hangar design.
As a result Rotor Work NZ can easily fit 2 3-bladed squirrels and around 10 2-bladed smaller helicopters. The combined factors of efficiency, manoeuvrability and practicality have yielded immediate benefits for Rotor Work NZ.
